KIDS AT THE MUSEUM
While our museum was planned and created to appeal to people of all ages, and certainly to adults and their memories of family holidays and special occasions spent at granny’s house, children tend to respond with the greatest excitement and delight.
No doubt our focus on vintage toys and games and dolls, and of course Christmas may explain it. But especially in our current time of video games and Legos, the charm of intricate beautiful objects from earlier times hold special appeal to kids.
Based upon children’s positive responses, we have attempted to build some special child-centered programs. Given our location in West Austin near Matthews School, we have done a bit of programming with the art teacher there and her classes. Additionally, for the past three summers we have worked with ATX Kids Club with counselors bringing groups of kids to the museum for a fun morning of exploration. After looking around the museum, each child is given paper and pencil and asked to identify and draw their favorite objects. In our relaxed comfortable museum environment, wonderful and whimsical drawings often result from these sessions.
