2017: MASKS FROM AROUND THE WORLD
The making of masks is an ancient practice prevalent throughout all cultures. The wearing of masks covers the entire spectrum from religious to spiritual to just plain entertainment. Masks have great power. They represent demons and deities, priests and shamans. The covering of the face with the identity of another person or entity creates great mystery and magic. And in the 2020 world of pandemic, masks take on a special importance of protecting ourselves and those around us from serious illness.
Our exhibit displays masks from many lands; from Africa, Indonesia, Italy, Mexico, and New Zealand. In addition, there are three ceramic character masks created by American artist Letitia Eldredge. Letitia’s masks are complex and made to be worn and performed in. They are painted and glazed inside and out to enhance their multidimensional illusion and enchantment.
